October Meeting Notes

Barter Hours Grants Pilot Project

At the October meeting on the 2nd at Maryann and Carlos Duenes’ restaurant, we voted in favor of giving 2 Barter Hour grants of 30 Barter Hours each, as a pilot project. The grant committee will create an application to bring to the next meeting.

Members' Follow-Through Issues

There was more discussion about the issue of members not following through with agreements re: services they have listed in the Directory. We will handle this problem in several ways:

  1. Directory listing will be optional for membership.
  2. The referring member will be expected to explain how Barter Hours works, and that it will work only if people follow through with what they promise (i.e., list in the Directory).
  3. Call Cordia if you cannot get a response from someone in the Directory.
  4. New member orientation will focus more on clarifying this issue.

Next Meeting Nov. 7th

The next meeting, Friday, November 7th will be our 2nd anniversary! It will be at the Traveler’s Café beginning at 6:00 pm with a potluck and bartering. Since this is a holiday month, we will be collecting donations of money, food (canned), and gift certificates for needy families. You may bring the name of someone you know who needs a boost and we will draw names from a hat.

We will also be collecting children’s clothing in good condition, for ages 0-18 years. And for ourselves... due to popular demand a winter clothing exchange, bring something and take something home.

We will have a short meeting and program beginning about 7:15 pm. First, the grant application will be reviewed. Second, we have two demonstrations lined up as part of a plan to highlight some of the different health alternatives offered in the Directory:

Carlos Lopez' Garden

Picture of Carlos Lopez' garden in school desk planters.

Carlos Lopez makes use of discarded school desks for garden planters.

Carlos Lopez, a very creative gardener receives a big cheer for also being a very sustainable gardener. Here is a picture of Carlos’ garden behind his home, where he has used old school desks as planters for some of his plants. One desk held a beautiful large cabbage. and others had prize tomato plants. Carlos is our workshop coordinator and creative uses of materials are just one of his many talents.

Carlos has helped to organize workshops for the members for gardening, weatherizing your home, and Spanish lessons. His enthusiasm and hard work are appreciated by Barter Hours and we are happy that he is so involved. So if you have a skill or information you would like to share with members just give Carlos a call and he will help you to recruit participants and advertise your workshop. His number is (505) 429-4587.

Hedy Trevino's Last-in-Series Gardening Workshop

The last workshop in her series was put on by Hedy Trevino, and everyone had a great time learning in the first workshop how to plant and grow a garden using straw bales. Hedy shared that she had learned a lot about gardening from her grandfather in Ocate when she was growing up. She has a real love for each of her little plants, and nurtures them with loving care.

Hedy gave three workshops in all, and at each one she handed out resources and materials for people to use. She covered seed and plant exchange and problem solving for our gardens in the second workshop. There was lots of plant and seed trading among the attendees, and support for each others’ gardens.

The third workshop was on preserving foods and it was great fun. A short CD on canning (available to check out from our library) started the workshop and then we discussed different ways to can and preserve foods. We made raspberry jam, and then homemade tamales which we got to eat when they were done. Yum, Yum!

Thanks for Participating!

We appreciate the work done by the members who put on workshops, and know there is a wealth of information in our membership. Share yours!
