At our last Barter Hours meeting, we went around the room and each person told how they had spent their Barter Hours. Many of us were excited with the different ways we had used them.
Two people, however, had not used any, one saying that she is saving her hours for something special. Let me point out that our Barter Hours group can only be successful if each of us actively uses our 'money.' This keeps the energy flowing and the club alive. If we save our 'money' the club becomes stagnant and can die.
Personally, for me, the Barter Hours club has added a new, rich element to our town. The comradeship and sense of community within our group is strong and growing. I see people reaching out to help and support each other. This is an added benefit, one that was totally unexpected.
As for my Barter Hours, let me tell you how I have spent them thus far. Here is my list:
Remember— an organization is only as strong as the sum of the relationships between its members!
Baba Ya-Tzu
Believe it or not, I know this list is not complete. Please let me encourage each and every one of you to read the Directory this week—preferably today—and find at least one service you want to use. Call to make an appointment. Remember, our club is only as strong as those of us in it. By using our hours, we collectively become stronger.
Always ask people and services if they will accept Barter Hours, and sign up your friends. For each new member you sponsor, you will receive a Barter Hour. Remember, a Barter Hour is worth one hour's time or $10.00, and each individual trade is decided by the participants—and can be all Barter Hours or Barter Hours and cash depending on what the people decide between them.
New members will be listed in the newsletter each month... here are New Members for November, 2007:
Besides fear, guilt, or loss of income—what gets you going? Do you have the opportunity to do something you really enjoy? What if you could make some income doing something that inspires you?
Many of us have had to give up things that just couldn't bring in enough income. With Barter Hours, maybe you can rekindle those dreams. Add something on your renewal form that you would like to do. When you get an inquiry for something you enjoy doing, it's a lot easier to find the time to do it.
This is the month to pin down your ideas for what you want to list in the Directory. Bring your renewal to the December meeting, Saturday Dec. 1st. You can mail it in or drop it off, also.
When you renew your membership you will get two Barter Hours. At the October Meeting, everyone was blown away by all the ways Virginia has spent Barter Hours. There is so much talent right here in our community.
Helping each other is another reward of participating in Barter Hours. Whether you are on the giving or receiving end, there is an equitable exchange that gives everyone involved a boost. The Barter Hour model we have adopted encourages you to value everyone's time equally. That small change opens up a lot of possibilities for us all. We feel we can ask for help from members because we know we can pay them equitably with Barter Hours. Let the U.S. currency continue with its values—Barter Hours is a separate program, and you are creating it.

We have worked to develop different ways of communicating with the membership, in order to meet the needs of everyone. Some of our members don't have time to attend meetings, some don't have computers and some do. So we have a newsletter, available through the mail or on the computer, we have a telephone committee for those without e-mail, we have information at the meetings, and we have developed a website (which includes an online discussion group). I want to be sure that everyone is being communicated with and is getting the information about meetings, activities, new members and what's happening in general.
After talking with some of our members I am finding that some people don't look at their e-mail on a regular basis, some don't know how to access the Directory online and print it off for themselves if they want a hard copy. What I need is feedback from people in the group. If you are having difficulty with getting information on the computer, please contact me so we can resolve the problem in a way that meets your needs. We have many new members who are doing many different things, and we are having fun at the potlucks and planning activities such as our winter clothing exchange at the last meeting.
If you want to attend a meeting there are members who will provide transportation; if you are having problmes with your computer, we have many people who can help you; and if you are just not sure how to get started trading your Barter Hours, we even have people such as Virginia West and Sherrill Martinez who are willing and happy to help you with instructions and ideas.
So please give us feedback on what will make Barter Hours work better for you! You can use e-mail, the telephone (505-426-1468) or even—heaven forbid—a letter. We want your participation on the level you can give it, and we want to help if something is road-blocking you.
Again, you can contact me on the phone at 426-1468, send me an e-mail, or contact me through the web through the E-Mail Us! links found at the top and bottom of each page. I hope to hear from you if there's anything you need.
A new hard-copy Directory will be coming out in December after the renewals are completed, and new members and their skills will be placed in each new newsletter for members without computer access.
Thanks for your help and participation!
