Las Vegas Barter Hours "En La Gente Confiamos" |
(This page last updated April 3, 2008)
Since you didn't get a full newsletter last month you may be wondering, "Que pasa?" A lot! The meeting started with a delicious potluck on a snowy March evening at Maryann and Carlos Duenes' restaurant (Mary Ann's Famous Burrito Kitchen).
We discussed details of the new member sign-up contest in April. Since it's now April, the contest to see who can recruit the most members is on! First prize is 10 Barter Hours—5, 3 and 1 BH's for second, third and fourth prizes respectively.
Welcome to new member Theresa Sandoval, who can help you with filing your taxes.
We now have signs for businesses to display announcing their participation in Barter Hours... thanks to Lucy Trujillo, The Sign Wizard, and a talented group of members who put the signs together. It was decided to pay Lucy $156.23 for the materials for 25 signs. We also decided that a business that takes some Barter Hours for part or all of their payment would be given a sign free (additional signs will cost $6.00 each). A member who doesn't barter as a licensed business may purchase a sign for $6.00.
In addition, a business will receive 8 Barter Hours for joining and agreeing to Barter for some of their services or goods. When a business renews they will receive 4 Barter hours—the referring member will receive 2 Barter Hours (instead of the one they'd get for recruiting an individual). All of these extra bonuses for businesses are because it is more complicated for businesses and we want to encourage them to go through the extra hassle; to lead the way—so to speak—for other businesses to jump in. Thank you to all the businesses who are working with us currently!
We had a terrific Straw bale gardening workshop taught by Hedy Trevino. Seven enthusiastic gardeners learned how to grow veggies in straw bales while conserving water, building soil, and extending the growing season. Much of Hedy's experience with straw bale gardening came from learning from her Grandfather, and she gave each of the participants a bundle of heirloom seeds passed down from him. Thank you Hedy!
There will be three more parts to this workshop—one in May, Sept, and Nov. If you would like attend the next one let Workshop Coordinator Carlos Lopez know (429-2108), and you can get a packet of seeds from Hedy from the first workshop.
Barter Hours will have an information table at the Synergy Fest Saturday April 26th from 11 to 6pm—let me know if you want to participate. Synergy Fest is a fun event and we are planning to do some solar cooking at our booth. The Fest is held at Melody Park on NMHU campus.
Check out this article in the Wall Street Journal, "Barter a Bit and Give Your Cash a Rest." It was in the Sunday March 16th issue, page WSJ3 (I'll have copies at the meeting).
A change for your Directory: Vicki Garland doesn't have eggs for barter now, but she has redworms available for gardens.
We need articles and writers for the newsletter, please contact Cordia if you would like to help (phone 426-1468).
Any comments? Let me know by e-mail or by phone at 26-1468. Thanks to all for your energy and enthusiasm,
Dianne Lindsay
