The Comedy Hour/Talent Night at the Traveler's Café was a lot of fun and laughs. Several brave people took the microphone to tell stories, jokes, poems, sing a song or show a funny DVD. Thanks to everyone who participated and to a good audience!
The New Member Orientation May 16th was attended by several new and interested members. This is a good place to ask questions, brainstorm the way you will use Barter Hours, and meet other members. There is usually one New Member Orientation a month, please let us know if you want to attend.
The June "meeting" will be a Barter Fest at Kevin Johnson's, June 7th starting at 6pm. We haven't tried this yet, so it is new territory. This is gardening season, so gardeners, bring your plants, produce, seeds, tools you want to trade, etc. Food Products members, please bring a sample of what you make or products to purchase. Services members, help us see what you want us to know about you.
Also bring other things to barter... you are not limited to what you have listed in the Directory. Please call Dianne to make suggestions. This meeting will not be a potluck as we hope the members that are doing food products will bring some of their delicious dishes for us to purchase with Barter Hours. Call 426-1468 to learn more.

One of the main things Barter Hours is about is bringing people together. This was demonstrated on the weekend of May 17th when members of Barter Hours came to help rebuild a platform and loading ramp for Maryann's Famous Burritos. A relative of Maryann and Carlo's donated lumber and in a short time, the project was underway. On the first day Shala, Richard, Dianne, and Sherrill, worked together to dig and make the foundation, and build the platform. Food was prepared by that great cook Maryann, with Carlos' help, and people worked as long as they could depending on their time schedules.
By the end of Friday, the platform was completed with extra space to off load, and a great place to sit out behind the restaurant. On Saturday the cross pieces for the ramp were in place and the ramp was half finished. A couple hours Sunday was all that was needed to finish the project, except for a railing that Carlos will add on the side. People who helped with finishing it were Trini and Sherrill, Dianne, Cordia, and Quieto, a friend of Carlos'.
It is so exciting and renews my faith in the human spirit, when people can work together in a spirit of co-operation and it is fun. Each of us learns something new about how we can contribute to a project, and go home feeling more fulfilled. These are hard and difficult times, but sometimes that is what it takes for people to remember ways to help each other and work together. If you need a work party, you can call someone in the Barter List that likes to organize and have them help you set it up. People who come to the work party can give as much time as they feel they have to help out, even if it is just for an hour. It is a great way to get to know people better, develop new skills and find out just what talents we have in our community.
