Members are hosting their own Barter Craft Fairs. Chris Perkowska invited one and all by a announcement at the last Barter Hours meeting, and then posted a sign outside her front door to her Gift Exchange Tea December 9th. This event allowed many of us to do some of our holiday shopping using Barter Hours. Great idea Chris and Rolf! The goodies were irresistible and the tea was delicious.
The December 1st Brunch meeting at Hickethiers was fun, but small due to some difficult weather conditions. At that meeting we decided to keep our meeting dates as they are—rotating throughout the year. Beginning with January, the meeting will be Monday, February's meeting will be Tuesday, and so on (except for Sundays, no meeting). July's meeting starts over with Monday. We will also continue to meet the first week of the month.
Renewals were discussed and it was reiterated that everyone will renew in November unless they join in November. The directory is coming along, but unfortunately the renewals are very slow to come in.
Our January meeting is Monday, January 7th at 6pm at 749 Dora Celeste Road, and will be followed by a potluck. At this meeting we will be discussing our potential as grantors. We will bring information to share from the Ithaca Grant Program. The Ithaca Hours organization gives Barter Hour grants to nonprofits that meet their criteria. The grants are limited in amount. We could use some of their structure and ideas to set up our own Barter Hours grant program.
Other suggested topics for the agenda are:
The 2008 Members' Services Directory will be available at the next meeting, February 5 (Tuesday) at 6pm. For more information, e-mail Cordia or call her at 426-1468.
Does anyone do New Year's Resolutions? Here's one that you may not have thought about—make time every month to do some bartering. When we use the network, it gets stronger, and encourages people to stay with it.
br>Larry Callahan will be teaching "Introduction to Airbrushing" at Luna Community college for the session beginning January 15. Learn the basic techniques and then pursue your own specialty: painting, murals, T-shirts, auto body retailing, etc. Tuesdays and Thursdays, evening classes. Enrollment begins Jan 03, '08.
The riderless horse could easily have been the round-faced, stylized cat peering at you from a fence top on a dimly moonlit night; or the chocolate-like, female nude figure, soothing her pregnant belly, a stack of gold coins defining her contour, a black faced Picasso type head grinning in the foreground. Put the pieces together and they equal Martin Montoya, devoted, native born, local artist and Barter Hours member, whose commissioned painting at UNM Children’s Hospital defines the diverse paths this artist can tread.
Experienced with acrylics, he paints mostly with Vasari oils made by Steve Seleck, who, in the spirit of our emerging barter system, employs Martin in summer packaging in exchange for tubes of a highly desirable product.
Martin is not limited to painting. His talents extend to other media, including sculpture with wood and bronze. The landscape at his Tecolote home evokes an era of stone sculpture, some remnants of which he has rearranged in a style that preserves the past and recognizes the ever-changing present.
He and his artist wife, JJ, native of Las Vegas to the bone, raise their eighteen month-old son surrounded by paintings, carvings and sculptures.
The multi-colored paint on the above T-shirt will outlive the fabric, a claim verified by Martin who showed me his worn, stained, 1989 shirt, still clinging to life, the picture remaining vibrant.
Martin can be contacted through our barter directory to discuss commission and viewing.
